Atlanta, GA -- 14 January, 2001 -- Built on the parking lot in front of the World Congress Center is a unique show home the Behind the Walls House . Left unfinished and open-walled, this demonstration model has been designed to showcase the latest in engineered systems, new materials, and high-value building products. The E/ONE Sewer system has been selected and featured in the show home.
Specifically designed to be installed within the home, the new UL-listed "appliance" provides wastewater storage (91-gallon tank capacity), grinding and pumping functions. Unit installs in minutes; plugs into a 240-volt outlet; and, with a clean, modern look, blends well in the mechanical room of any home. It can be piped into E/ONE low pressure sewer system lines or retrofit into an existing gravity system.
Benefits to builders and developers are enormous, according to Michael Clute, president of Environment One Corporation.
"E/ONE's low pressure sewer system costs less than half the cost of conventional central sewer systems," according to Clute. "Gravity sewers require an 8- to 24-inch pipe and deep excavation. The E/ONE IDU requires only a shallow trench and 1 1/4- to 3-inch diameter piping."
Builders can now salvage previously orphaned lots, like those below sewer Grade -- previously unbuildable sites, says Clute.
The system, adds Clute, can also save builders up to 80 percent of up-front costs. Builders need not buy the home disposal units until each house is ready to be turned over. Only a network of small-diameter pipes outside the home needs to go in up-front.
E/ONE, with a long track record installing identical disposal systems outside the home, boasts a proven mean time between service calls of its systems of 10 years.
In the E/ONE system, wastewater is driven from the home's disposal system to the treatment facility through small-diameter pipes buried just below the frost line. The E/ONE unit can actually move wastewater vertically more than 150 feet, or transport it horizontally up to two miles. The waste pipe can follow the contours of the landscape. This eliminates expensive deep digging required for both septic tanks and gravity sewers.
"Environmental disruption is minimized," Clute says. "Trees don't have to be knocked down for septic fields. In an existing community, trenchless technology or directional drilling can even be used." Public safety also benefits, Clute claims. "A central sewer system eliminates the need for septic fields. And septic tanks, in my opinion, are potential environmental time bombs." Another public safety plus is that the E/ONE system is a closed-loop system that does not allow untreated storm overflow water back into the water resource.
Finally, Clute adds, these days, a home offering a central sewer is much more desirable to a consumer than a home with a septic tank. The E/ONE Sewer is a vital amenity for new communities, and the new E/ONE Home Wastewater Disposal appliance represents the quickest and easiest installation yet for builders.
